The Best of Classic Horror

Browning, Tod & Waggner, George & Whale, James

Collection of four classic horror films. ’Dracula’ (1931), based on the novel by Bram Stoker, follows estate agent Renfield (Dwight Frye) as he travels to Transylvania to arrange the sale of an English mansion to nobleman Count Dracula (Bela Lugosi).

Renfield discovers that he has bitten off more than he can chew when his host turns out to be a 500-year-old vampire.

When Dracula descends on London, vampire expert Professor Van Helsing (Edward van Sloan) attempts to put an end to the bloodsucking.

In ’Wolf Man’ (1941) American-educated Larry Talbot (Lon Chaney Jr) returns to his father (Claude Rains)’s mansion in Wales.

He takes a liking to local girl Gwen Conliffe (Evelyn Ankers) and escorts her to the local fair, however when she tells him about the local legend of the werewolf he laughs it off as superstition.

Later in the evening Larry is bitten by the wolf as he tries to rescue a friend of Jenny’s and discovers that the legend is only too true when the next full moon transforms him into the murderous ’wolfman’. ’Frankenstein’ (1931), based on the novel by Mary Shelley, tells the story of scientist Henry Frankenstein (Colin Clive), who has become alienated from his friends and bride-to-be through his obsessive determination to create life.

Frankenstein has created a monster out of body parts acquired by his assistant, Fritz (Frye), and succeeds in giving it life during an electrical storm.

However, due to a mistake by Fritz, the creature (Karloff) possesses the brain of a killer, and goes on the rampage, terrorising the local community. ’Bride of Frankenstein’ (1935), the sequel to ’Frankenstein’ (1931), finds scientist Henry Frankenstein (Clive) recuperating from the events of the first film.

Believing his creation to have been destroyed in a fire, Henry is perturbed to receive a visit from his former mentor, Dr Praetorius (Ernest Thesiger), who wishes Frankenstein (Karloff) to resume his experiments.

Frankenstein refuses, but when Praetorius discovers the monster alive, he uses it to kidnap Frankenstein’s wife and attempts to blackmail the doctor into creating a mate.
